Industrial construction projects are complex. A well-thought-out concept for on-site-logistics is important for efficient processes. Entrusting the handling of the intercontinental project shipping solutions and for the on-site-logistics to the same logistics service provider may add fruitfully to optimizing the construction process. Igor Bartuli, who is our “man on-site”, explains some benefits and gives insights into “on-site-logistics and its challenges”.
Mr. Bartuli, what is the main advantage when entrusting logistics solutions for shipments and on-site-logistics on construction sites to one and the same logistics service provider?
Generally speaking, processes may be optimized and synergies are created on different levels. Our experience shows that unnecessary challenges may arise when the specific requirements at the actual constructions site are left unconsidered while planning and executing intercontinental shipping solutions for the machinery and construction material needed.
The question: “What are the needs and what is manageable at the actual construction site?” is important for efficient construction processes.
Connecting both fields of logistics – shipping and on-site – may save time and money, for example by adjusting intercontinental project shipping processes to the actual requirements at the construction site.

Mr. Bartuli, you let us know that on-site logistics may be divided into three phases: “planning”, “actual delivery of goods” and “the inspection of goods before handing them over to the installation teams”.
What is going on in the second phase?
There is no blueprint answer, as each project and each construction site is, of course, individual. In any case, this phase includes fine-tuning space, staff and equipment to the delivery processes and the delivery process itself to the current needs of the construction process. That is what we coordinate. This includes interim storage and on-site movements of goods. The main contact person for us is the sites’ manager.
The site manager is responsible for the project as a whole. His or her tasks are multi-facetted and include not only technical matters concerning the construction, but also topics like the management of human resources and reporting. Another one is logistics. When performing on-site-logistics, we take care of logistics matters for him or her and act as “extended arm” so he or she can concentrate on other fields of work.

And how about the inspection of incoming goods and their preparation for installation?
This job section includes the classical procedure of checking every single loading unit for load and count. We document each shipment’s single pieces which were delivered. Also, we check the goods for damages and record if there are any. That requires a lot of time as detailed packing lists may well encompass more than 10.000 positions. Then we make sure, that goods are ready when they are needed in the installation process. This often involves several steps of goods’ handling.
